THE HISTORY & LEGACY OF BANARASI SILK

Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together”. We think this quote by ‘Mark Twain’ is a beautiful tribute to this amazing city. Banarasi silk was introduced to India by the Mughal Empire with its intricate weaving, designing and craftsmanship. During the Mughal period weaving of brocades with intricate designs using gold and silver threads was the speciality of Banaras.

Made only for the Royalty, Brocade weaving started in Banaras in 17th century when weavers in Gujarat migrated to Banaras during Mughal Emperor Akbar’s reign. It was Emperor Akbar’s love for fine silks and fabrics that led to the birth of the Royal Banarasi brocade with all the classic motifs. According to the Sanskrit sources, Banaras was an ancient centre for textile manufacture.

The Banarasi brocades we see today has a mixture of two different cultures, the Mughals and the Indian with  a long history of cultural intermingling brought on by political conquests, trade and migration. Today the fabric is revered for its quality, richness, royal and appealing looks.

ATTENTION TO DETAILED CRAFTSMANSHIP

It’s the attention to detail & precision that makes the difference between average & stunning. Given the challenges of getting the things together and raw materials, its our art work that highlights once you get the finished products. Conceptualized as a naksha (design) on paper first, the nakshabandha (designer) translates the design on Banarasi weaves, using fine gauze of gold or silver threads with immaculate precision into patterns that range from artistic elaboration to minimalistic intricacy. The whole weave looks like as if it has been embroidered on the loom.

BRILLIANCE OF ZARI IN BROCADE

Zari threads are the signature element of Varanasi brocade, they are the gold or silver thread used as raw material for weaving or embroidery in brocade fabric where the shimmering metallic designs are in shades of copper, silver, or more often, gold.
